Congratulations on your new tattoo!
It’s essential to follow this aftercare guide based on the dry healing method.
Proper aftercare is crucial for preventing infections and keeping your tattoo looking its best.
Keep it covered:
Your tattoo artist will cover your fresh tattoo with a protective bandage. Keep this covering on until you get home.
Cleanse gently:
- After removing the covering, gently wash your tattoo with mild, fragrance-free soap and warm water.
- Use your fingertips to carefully cleanse the area, and avoid using a washcloth or sponge, as they can be too abrasive.
- Rinse thoroughly and gently pat the area dry with a clean, disposable paper towel.
During the first 2–3 days, clean the tattoo regularly to prevent excess plasma from building up on the surface of the skin, as this can cause scabbing
Let it breathe:
After washing, allow your tattoo to air dry, keeping it clean for the next 2–3 days without applying any oils, lotion, or moisturiser. This will promote the natural healing process by allowing your skin to breathe.
Moisturise after 2–3 days:
Once the initial 2–3 days have passed, you can start applying a fragrance-free, natural moisturiser to your tattoo. Preferably apply the moisturiser after a shower, ensuring that the tattoo is clean before application.
Avoid direct sunlight:
Keep your new tattoo out of direct sunlight for at least two weeks. Once your tattoo has fully healed, apply a high-SPF sunscreen to protect it from fading due to sun exposure.
No swimming or soaking:
For at least two weeks, avoid submerging your tattoo in water, including swimming pools, hot tubs, baths, and saunas. Showers are fine, but keep them short and avoid direct water pressure on your tattoo.
Don’t scratch or pick:
As your tattoo heals, it may become itchy and start to peel. Resist the urge to scratch, pick, or peel the skin, as this can lead to scarring and loss of ink.
Be patient:
Healing times vary depending on tattoo size, location, and your body’s healing abilities.
Generally, it takes about 2–4 weeks for a tattoo to heal, but it may take up to 8 weeks for the deeper layers of skin to fully regenerate.
